Craft Story
Originating in West Bengal, Baluchari sarees flourished under the patronage of the Murshidabad court in the 17th century. Traditionally woven in silk and known for their storytelling motifs featuring human and animal figures alongside floral elements, the designs have gradually evolved over time, with geometric patterns and contemporary interpretations now widely seen in modern weaves. Today, Baluchari sarees are often woven using the Jacquard handloom technique, where punch cards guide the loom to create intricate patterns directly in the fabric. While the craft was historically produced in silk, cotton yarns are also used today, offering lighter variations while preserving the distinctive woven motifs and artistic heritage of this celebrated Bengal textile tradition.
