Craft Story
Once known as Champa, Bhagalpur has carried the art of silk through centuries. Its famed Tussar silk, once cherished by royalty, travelled far beyond India—carried under royal protection to lands along the Mediterranean. And the craft still lives on. Sun-dried cocoons preserve the silk’s natural character. Thigh reeling strengthens the yarn and deepens its lustre. Kundi finishing brings softness, sheen and character to the fabric. Tussar waste spinning gives even discarded silk a second life. In 1810–11, Buchanan Hamilton recorded the fine Tussar of Bhagalpur. More than two centuries later, the tradition continues. In 2013, Bhagalpuri silk received its GI tag—a mark of its unmistakable origin. From Champa to the Silk City, Bhagalpur’s story is not just worn, it is embraced with pride.
