Craft Story
Awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, Chanderi sarees have been woven in the quaint town of Chanderi since the 13th century and flourished during the Mughal era. By the 19th century, their fine fabric was compared to the famed muslin of Dhaka (Bangladesh). In 1910, the royal family of Gwalior established a training centre to preserve and promote this craft. Chanderi fabric is known for its sheer, lightweight texture and is woven in three main varieties: pure silk, silk-cotton, and cotton. Shibori is a traditional Japanese manual resist-dyeing technique used to create distinctive patterns on fabric. The craft is believed to date back to the 8th century.
