Craft Story
Ikat comes from the Indonesian word mengikat, meaning “to tie.” In Odisha, this intricate tie-and-dye technique creates the distinctive soft, feathered patterns seen in Sambalpuri textiles. Similar motifs can even be found in the sculpted garments of the Konark Temple. Over time, colonial trade and the rise of machine-made textiles pushed many traditional weavers into hardship. After Independence, freedom fighter Radhashyam Meher of Sambalpur played a key role in reviving and sustaining the craft. Each Sambalpuri Ikat saree is created through a meticulous process in which threads are tied, dyed, and then woven to form precise patterns. The entire weaver’s family often contributes to the process, and depending on the complexity, a saree may take from a few days to several months to complete. Today, the Sambalpuri Bandha saree, woven in cotton or silk, proudly carries a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognizing it as a unique textile heritage of Odisha.
