The story of the Fulia Tangail saree is one of resilience, migration, and enduring craftsmanship.
Its origins lie in Tangail, a historic weaving region in present-day Bangladesh, where artisans have practised this exquisite weaving tradition for over 400 years. Celebrated for their mastery of fine cotton weaving, Tangail weavers created sarees renowned for their lightweight texture, elegant motifs, and exceptional comfort.
History brought this cherished craft to India. During the Partition of 1947, and later following the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, many Tangail weaving families migrated to West Bengal. A large number settled in Fulia (Phulia) in the Nadia district, where they rebuilt their lives while preserving their ancestral weaving traditions.
Over the decades, Fulia emerged as India's foremost centre for authentic Tangail handloom weaving.
Traditionally, Fulia Tangail sarees were woven entirely by hand on pit looms using fine cotton yarns. Today, while many artisans continue to preserve these age-old methods, several weaving clusters also incorporate Jacquard weaving. This thoughtful blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern weaving technology allows artisans to produce increasingly sophisticated designs without losing the essence of the Tangail weave.
A Fulia Tangail saree is distinguished by its feather-light drape, breathable fabric, delicate butis, graceful borders, and intricately woven pallus. The cultural significance of this weaving tradition extends beyond national borders.
